The College of Nursing
The UMSL College of Nursing was established in 1981 with the initiation of a BSN completion program. A full BSN program including an accelerated option for non-nurses, MSN programs and academic and professional doctoral programs were established by 2000. UMSL is the only public institution in the St. Louis metropolitan area that offers baccalaureate through doctoral nursing education. The College enjoys a mutually beneficial relationship with the region’s health services providers – our community of interest.
College of Nursing Faculty
The College’s nursing faculty members are recognized as leaders in the education of nurses and innovators in nursing practice and research. The faculty, through teaching and research, is at the forefront in the changes in delivery of health care and are dedicated to the advancement of the nursing profession. Student’s have access to faculty through classroom and clinical settings, the internet and extracurricular activities.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing
The PhD program is designed for graduates to attain the following program outcomes:
- Serve as leaders in nursing and health care
- Function as nurse scientists to advance the practice of nursing and contribute to interdisciplinary knowledge
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge, values, and skills in a selected functional role
- Use theory, research knowledge and methods to, implement and evaluate
a. practice interventions,
b. health systems,
c. clinical teaching.
Courses in nursing science and theory, research and statistics and cognates are required. Students complete dissertation research under supervision of the graduate faculty in order to make a contribution to nursing knowledge. Students may select additional courses in order to prepare for faculty or administrative positions when they complete the program.
Graduate Supplemental Fee 2 is charged for N7200, N7211, and N7401 in addition to the Graduate Educational Fee.
