Faculty

Tenured/Tenure Track (Regular) Appointments

College of Nursing tenured/tenure track regular faculty share responsibility with other University faculty to contribute to teaching, research and service.

Individuals holding regular appointments are expected to devote 50% of their full-time endeavors to teaching, 30% to research and 20% to service. Teaching responsibilities are approved by the Dean and are based upon the recommendations of the Associate Dean and Program Directors. Faculty members usually teach in more than one program. Regular faculty members are expected to pursue extramural funding and to incorporate requests for salary support in proposals. Service may include activities at the College, campus, and/or system level as well as professional service. Faculty preparing proposals or with extramural salary support may have workloads adjusted (See Workload policy).

Appointments
Untenured appointment is considered probationary. University of Missouri-St. Louis guidelines relative to promotion and tenure are available here.

Untenured faculty holding the rank of Assistant Professor are reviewed annually related to appropriate progress towards tenure and promotion. Comprehensive cumulative review occurs at the midpoint of appointment. Time alone is not sufficient for promotion and tenure; rather, continued demonstration of excellence in teaching, research and service is required. Specific promotion and/or tenure guidelines may be found here.

Untenured and tenured faculty holding the rank of Associate Professor are reviewed annually related to appropriate progress towards tenure and/or promotion. Length of time in service is not sufficient for promotion. Rather, continued demonstration of outstanding performance in teaching, research and service is required and should be limited to scholars who have achieved national distinction. Specific promotion and/or tenure guidelines may be found here.

The rank of Professor is reserved for those tenured individuals demonstrating consistent, superior performance over time in teaching and service. Time alone is not sufficient for promotion to Professor; rather, continued demonstration of exceptional performance in teaching, research and service is required.

Post Tenure Review
Tenured faculty will undergo comprehensive review in five years intervals. Criteria for tenure renewal is evidence that the candidate continues to meet the College’s expectations for their current rank and tenure. The procedures are the same as those for initial review although external evaluations of published research are not expected.

Graduate Faculty Status
Graduate faculty status enables faculty to be actively involved in teaching and research activities at the master’s and doctoral levels and is conferred upon appointment.

Orientation
All new faculty members are expected to participate in an orientation to the University and College. Orientation to the University is held prior to the fall semester with new faculty colloquia held throughout the year. Information related to the University orientation may be found here. The Center for Teaching and Learning conducts this orientation and the colloquia scheduled throughout the year and provides a variety of other faculty development activities and supports.

Nontenure Track Appointments

College of Nursing nontenure track faculty members share responsibility with other University faculty to contribute to teaching and service.  Nontenure track faculty members may be appointed as Teaching, Clinical, or Research faculty, in accordance with the University of Missouri system policies and College of Nursing Appointment and Promotion criteria.  Faculty policies related to the nontenure tracks are located in the University of Missouri-St. Louis Faculty Handbook.

Individuals holding nontenure track appointments normally are expected to devote 80% of their full-time endeavors to teaching and 20% to service (see Workload policy). Teaching responsibilities are approved by the Dean and are based upon the recommendations of the Associate Dean and Program Directors. Faculty members may teach across programs depending on qualifications, need, and approval by the Graduate School for teaching in one of the graduate programs. Service is achieved through representation at the College, campus and/or system level as well as professional service.

Appointments
Nontenure track appointments are made annually and do not qualify for tenure. Initial appointment is made by the Dean and rank is conferred by the Dean.  Descriptions of types of appointments

Promotion
The College’s Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee (APT) provides specific guidelines for promotion. Individuals desiring to be considered for promotion in rank are to submit a letter of application accompanied by a detailed dossier to the Dean’s Office by May 15 of year prior to application process. The completed dossier is submitted to the Dean’s office by December 1. The dossier is reviewed by the appropriate committee representatives who provide written recommendation to the Dean on or before March 15. The Dean notifies the candidate of the promotion decision no later than April 15. (see Non Tenure Track Promotion guidelines).

Promotion in rank to Clinical or Teaching Assistant Professor requires a minimum of three years equivalent teaching experience at the Clinical Instructor level with a teaching and service record that demonstrates consistent competence. Time alone is not sufficient for promotion.

Promotion in rank to Clinical or Teaching Associate Professor may be considered after a minimum four years equivalent teaching experience at the Clinical Assistant Professor level and possession of an earned doctorate. Candidates seeking promotion must demonstrate an ongoing pattern of teaching and service that displays proficiency and commitment to quality. Time alone is not sufficient for promotion; rather, continued demonstration of excellence in teaching and service is required.

Promotion to Clinical or Teaching Professor is reserved for those individuals demonstrating consistent, superior performance over time in teaching and service. Time alone is not sufficient for promotion to Clinical Professor; rather, continued demonstration of exceptional performance in teaching and service is required.

Graduate Faculty Status
Graduate faculty status enables faculty to be actively involved in teaching and research activities at the master’s or doctoral level. See UMSL's policy statements

 Graduate Teaching Faculty Status
Graduate teaching faculty status allows faculty with distinctive clinical expertise or scholarly pursuits who do not meet the requirements for graduate faculty appointment to contribute to master’s level education. See the graduate faculty rules for specific guidelines regarding exceptions.

Doctoral Faculty Status
Doctoral faculty status enables faculty to actively participate in the research process of doctoral students and is required for individuals to serve as dissertation chairs or committee members. Doctoral faculty status is normally restricted to faculty holding tenured/tenure track regular appointments.

Orientation

Faculty—Part-Time (Adjunct) Appointments

Individuals are extended part-time appointments on a semester-by-semester or annual basis as needed. Adjunct faculty appointments are approved by the Dean and are based upon the recommendations of the Associate Dean and Program Directors. Part-time faculty members are not expected to provide service to the College or University although they are expected to attend course and faculty meetings. Part-time faculty members are not eligible for University benefits. Part-time faculty members do receive parking and facilities usage as outlined in Facilities and Services.

Tenure
Part-time faculty members are considered part of the nontenure track and therefore do not qualify for tenure.

Rank
Rank is based upon prior clinical and/or teaching experience. Rank conferred is based upon full time nontenure track teaching faculty guidelines.

Graduate Faculty Status
Graduate faculty status enables faculty to be actively involved in teaching and research activities at the master’s level. Graduate faculty status is campus specific and is approved by the Graduate Dean. Part-time faculty members are generally not eligible for graduate faculty appointment, although certain exceptions can be requested for individuals with unique clinical expertise needed to teach in the MSN program. 

Graduate Teaching Faculty Status
Graduate teaching faculty status allows faculty with distinctive clinical expertise or scholarly pursuits who do not meet the requirements for graduate faculty appointment to contribute to master’s level education. Appointment is time-limited and must be renewed every five years. Graduate teaching faculty status is campus specific and is approved by the Graduate Dean. The College Dean may nominate a part-time faculty member with evidence of scholarly endeavors. The Dean or Associate Dean upon request will provide information related to seeking graduate faculty status.  See the graduate faculty rules for specific guidelines regarding exceptions.

Doctoral Faculty Status
Doctoral faculty status enables faculty to actively participate in the research process of doctoral students and is required for individuals to serve as dissertation chairs or committee members. Doctoral faculty status is normally restricted to faculty holding regular appointments.

Orientation
All new adjunct faculty members are expected to participate in an orientation to the University and College prior to the initial semester of appointment. Orientation to the University is held prior to each semester as a half-day session.
