College of Nursing

The Nurse Practitioner

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) option prepares nurse practitioners with emphasis on health promotion and illness prevention in providing primary care and requires a minimum of 43 credits. Students complete 12 credit hours of core coursework that focus on issues and concepts critical to understanding the rapidly changing health care system. These courses address values in health care decision making, policy and finance in health care organizations, societal issues impacting health, population-based foundations of health, theoretical foundations, and research for evidence-based practice.

A greater understanding of the advanced practice role is achieved through completion of the remaining 31 credit hours. In addition to the core APN courses, students learn to manage the health care of target populations through course and clinical activities. Students may choose to concentrate studies in adult, pediatric, family, or womens health management. Clinical activities are focused on enactment of the role with the chosen population and involve 600 clinical hours. The program requires summer study.

Effective January 2012, UMSL is no longer offering the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program, in collaboration with the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Applicants who are interested in UMKC's Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program may contact them directly at umkc.edu/nursing.
