Writing Opportunities
Attention: Honors Writers, Poets, Artists, and Photographers
Countless opportunities are available for all who are interested in “the arts” at PLHC, and here are just three of those possibilities: Bellerive, our creative writing publication, our Annual PLHC Writing Contest, and our “Celebrate the Arts in Honors” Art Show.
Bellerive, our creative writing book, published yearly, is open to the entire campus. Writers, poets, artists and photographers submit essays, stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and more. Selections are made by the Bellerive staff that is composed of fifteen honors students who take Honors 2020—Bellerive Workshop, a three-hour honors credit course. The staff produces the publication through the hard work of reading, editing, computing, and designing the writings and artworks we receive. Anyone interested in Bellerive should see the Director of Writing or an honors advisor. A unique and enjoyable experience awaits those interested in being part of the Bellerive team.
The Annual PLHC Writing Contest is open to all honors students. Each student may submit one essay written in any honors class. Cash prizes and a chance for publication in Bellerive are awarded to three students each year. The deadline for submissions is in May, and students will be informed by email of that date, the winners, and more information.
The 2002-2003 year marked the First Annual “Celebrate the Arts in Honors” Art Show and International Potluck Luncheon. Open to all Honors College students, the juried show offers the artists of our college—faculty and students—the chance to display their works. Students from all majors are encouraged to take part in the show by submitting artwork and photographs, as well as working on the displays, publicity and musical entertainment. The opening day of the show is celebrated with music and an International Potluck Luncheon for all of our students. Those interested in submitting original artwork and photographs should watch for guidelines and committee meeting dates on their student emails. Opportunities to assist with the show and earn independent study credit are also available. Please see the Director of Writing, Nancy Gleason, for more details.
