The Preliminary Copy
• A preliminary copy is due in the Graduate School 2 weeks before the oral defense.
• Consult the Graduation Deadlines for the last possible dates each semester.
• The M3 must accompany the thesis with all the committee signatures on it.
• Your student account will be charged the thesis microfilming fee and optional copyright fee after you receive dean’s approval.

Abstracts

Abstracts are required for all theses submitted to the Graduate School.  An abstract briefly states the essential information of the project and should consist of no more than 150 words.

Creative theses should include:

  • The type of work (i.e. novel, collection of poems)
  • Description of theme, genre, style, or plot

Research theses should include:

  • The objective (research question)
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion

 

Preparing the Final Copies for Paper Submission
• Original Copies must be typewritten and on good quality paper
• The copies must be legible and in correct numerical order.
• Margins must be 1 ½ inches on the left and 1 inch on the top, bottom and right

•If your unit does not have a standard title page, you may follow the sample title page for ETD's.

• Obtaining advisory committee signatures for the title page is optional, however your academic unit may require the signatures.

Paper Submission Instructions
The following items need to be brought to the Graduate School when your thesis is ready for publishing:
M2 with the “Committee Report” completed. (Your academic unit may send this ahead of time.)
M5 with appropriate signatures.
• 3 unbound copies of the thesis.  No Staples or Clips.  The copies may be submitted in one stack with colored sheets between them.
• A signed Publishing Agreement (pdf)
• A receipt showing your student account has been paid or a check for your fees made to UM-St. Louis.

Mailing Instructions

  • Make sure the mailer is sturdy (Tyvek envelope or box)
  • Include your signed publishing agreement.
  • Include your final approval form.
    (Your advisor may send your final approval form directly to the Graduate School)
  • You may include a check or money order made to UM-St. Louis for your publishing fees.
