V. Dean's Report

The Dean distributed an updated list of Graduate Council subcommittee members. The Admissions and Scholarship committee will be reviewing Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship applications. The deadline is 27 October. The Graduate School will send out a reminder about the upcoming competition to the Graduate Program Directors. The Curriculum committee has 28 proposals pending. The Rules and Regulations committee will be reviewing rule changes from the College of Education. There are 11 proposed changes ready to be forwarded to the Program Development committee.

The Graduate Student Insurance program has not been widely embraced by the students. Of the GTAs/GRAs/Graduate Fellows eligible for the subsidy, only 9 signed up for the program. Of the International GTAs/GRAs/Graduate Fellows, 78 students were eligible for the subsidy. On the Columbia campus, it is projected that 35% of graduate students will enroll in the program. The St. Louis campus' graduate student body is more likely employed full-time and already enrolled in an insurance program.

The Dean attended the St. Louis Plant Life Sciences Coalition on behalf of the Chancellor. One issue raised is the desire to have more degree programs in life sciences. Terry Thiel has been working with Shirley Bissen on developing a Professional Master's Degree program combining science and management. The proposal would be for a master's degree requiring about 40 credit hours.

There being no other business, the meeting adjourned at 2:02 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Matthew Keefer
Secretary and Vice-Chairperson
