III. Committee Reports

Curriculum and Instruction - Thaddeus Metz

The C&I Committee recommends approving the following proposals to add courses to the curriculum, as they strike us as sufficiently substantive:

Stu Art 363 Special Topics in Photography (add)
Bio 302 Science in the Real World: Microbes in Action (add)
Bio 333 Nucleic Acid Structure and Function (add)
Bio 362 History of Natural History: Systematics, Ecology, and Natural History in
The Strict Sense (add)*
Bio 365 Theory of Systematics (add)
Bio 433 Advanced Nucleic Acid Structure and Function (add)
Bio 453 Evolution of Plant Development (add)
Bio 462 Advanced History of Natural History: Systematics, Ecology and Natural
History in the Strict Sense (add)
Comm 411 Seminar in Mass Communication (add)
Comm 445 Seminar in Advanced Organizational Communication (add)**
Hist 447 Collaborative Research (add)
Mus 443 Special Applied Studies (add)

*Part of the proposal for Biology 362 is that it count as satisfying the science/mathematics distribution requirement. We question this aspect of the proposal, since the course seems to deal principally with intellectual history and hence arguably does not lie in the core of the "hard" disciplines.

**We found this course proposal to include a serious typographical error: both the course number and its prerequisite are listed as 431. We have learned that the proper course number is 445 and its prerequisite is 431.

The C&I Committee recommends approving the following proposals to add courses to the curriculum. The courses are designed to help nursing students who wish to specialize in management or education.

Nsg 420 Nursing Program and Curriculum Development (add)
Nsg 421 Instructional Strategies in Nursing Education (add)
Nsg 425 Managed Care Services (add)
Nsg 426 Health Resources Management (add)
Nsg 427 Theory and Practice in Nursing Leadership (add)

The C&I Committee recommends approving the following proposals to drop courses from the curriculum. In all but one instance, the course material has been reallocated to different courses. In the case of Music 375, the course is no longer sponsored by Philosophy and as a result Music is dropping it entirely.

Mus 375 Musical Aesthetics (drop)*
Mus 445 Applied Music II (drop)
Mus 446 Applied Music II (drop)
Mus 447 Applied Music II (drop)
Nsg 461A Adult Health Management (drop)
Nsg 461C Child Health Management (drop)
Nsg 461F Family Health Management (drop)
Nsg 461W Women's Health Management (drop)

*The required signature from the Philosophy Department had not been obtained, but Philosophy has now signed off.

The C&I Committee recommends approving the following proposals to change courses in the curriculum. At the heart of most of these changes are changes in prerequisite and number, viz., changes that are relatively minor.

Nsg 300 Community Health Nursing (change prereq)
Nsg 306 Nursing Research (change prereq.)
Nsg 308 Management and Leadership in Nursing (change prereq)
Nsg 310 Senior Synthesis (change prereq)
Nsg 311 Synthesis in Nursing Practice (change prereq.)
Nsg 409NE Role of the Nurse Educator (change hrs, prereq, descrip)
Nsg 409 NL Role of the Nurse Leader (change #, title, hrs, prereq, descrip--formerly 409NA)
Nsg 424N Advanced Health Assessment of the Neonate (change #, prereq--formerly 404N)
Nsg 427N Pharmacology for the Neonate (change #, prereq--formerly 407N)
Nsg 448 Neonatal Nursing I (change #, prereq--formerly 461N)
Nsg 449 Neonatal Nursing II (change #, prereq--formerly 462N)
Nsg 452 Synthesis Practicum (change #, prereq, descrip--formerly 472)
Nsg 454A Synthesis Practicum (change #, prereq, descrip--formerly 474A)
Nsg 454B Synthesis Practicum (change #, prereq, descrip--formerly 474B)
Nsg 454C Synthesis Practicum (change #, prereq, descrip--formerly 474C)

The C&I Committee recommends approving the following proposals to change courses in the curriculum. These changes are routine.

Econ 353 Managerial Economics (change prereq/descrip.)
Mus 421 Graduate Conducting (change title)
Mus 431 Ensemble Performance (change title, hours)
Mus 444 Graduate Applied Music (change title, prereq, descrip.)
Mus 451 Graduate Instrumental Methods (change title)
Mus 461 Graduate Choral Methods (change title)
Mus 477 Graduate Microcomputer Applications in Music (change title)
SW 382 Theory and Practice with Older Adults (change title)
SW 490 Graduate Field Practicum I (change hours, descrip.)
SW 491 Graduate Field Practicum II (change hours, descrip.)
SW 492 Graduate Field Practicum III (change hours, descrip.)

Council accepted the committee report and agreed to approve Biology 362 if the committee is satisfied with its conversations with the chair of the Biology department.

There being no other business the meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted

Matthew Keefer
