Graduate School Faculty Research Fellowships
Goal
This fellowship is designed to increase the diversity of dissertation
committee members and chairs by recognizing associate professors working
toward promotion to full professor. Each fellowship supports a faculty
member from a group under-represented in his/her discipline to work on
research projects designed to enhance his/her application for promotion
to full professor.
Award
Each Faculty Research Fellow will receive lecturer-replacement funds for
a one-course reassignment as well as a stipend and tuition remission for
a graduate research assistant. Applicants and nominees may propose a fellowship
for one or two long semester(s). (This fellowship is not designed to support
summer research.)
Expectations
Each Faculty Research Fellow will report monthly to the Dean of the Graduate
School on progress toward completing a major research project. Each fellow
will attend meetings the Dean of the Graduate School convenes with the
department chair, academic dean, members of ATP Committees, and other
mentors to discuss the fellow’s progress, expectations for promotion
to full professor, and suggestions for professional development. At the
end of the award term, the fellow will submit to the Graduate Dean a report
on the completed project with suggestions for enhancing the program for
future Faculty Research Fellows.
Qualifications
Selected Faculty Research Fellows must a) be a member of a group that
is under-represented in that discipline, b) have been a tenured associate
professor at UM-St Louis for at least six years, c) have a proposal to
start or complete a project needed for promotion, d) have a track record
of successful annual evaluations, and e) have experience or other evidence
of an interest in mentoring doctoral students.
To apply
Applicants submit to the Graduate Dean a brief statement (no more than
4 pages) describing the project they propose to conduct along with a summary
of how they meet the qualifications and ways to cover the class(es) they
are scheduled to teach.
