The Relationship between the Musical Preferences of Fourth Grade Students and their Parents

 

Abstract

“The ability to download music from the Internet is at everyone’s fingertips” (Robert’s & Foehr, 2008, p. 12)! This study attempted to determine if fourth grade students’ musical preferences were influenced by their parents’ musical preferences, their home environment, and technology they used for music listening. Open and closed-ended questions, along with 30-second music samples of several different genres were used in a questionnaire that took less than 10 minutes to complete. Regression analysis was employed and confirmed a discrepancy with the literature. By correcting some of the issues that were encountered in this study, a replication of this study might result in validation of the model thus providing support for the literature. It may be possible the research was done in an era that is just beginning to minimize the musical influences of parents or perhaps the influences of technology have actually expanded childrens’ music preferences.
