Prerequisites: Freshman composition or equivalent (3-6 hours) and junior standing.

This course further develops the experienced writer's style and analytical capabilities to the level of sophistication necessary for upper-division writing assignments and for academic and professional settings. The course includes complex readings, focuses on persuasion and argumentation, expands upon students' research and documentation skills, and requires research in university libraries. This course fulfills the University's requirement for a junior-level course in communicative skills. It may not be taken on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

This course will explore how literacy is situated in mainstream and non-mainstream cultures, sometimes through the stories women tell, sometimes through scholarly articles about literacy, and sometimes through class projects that explore particular literacies--particular ways of reading, knowing, writing, thinking, and acting.

Prerequisites: Nine hours of Psychology or consent of instructor.

This course addresses concepts and methods for developing leadership skills in work and everyday settings. Contemporary approaches to leadership development are reviewed in relation to psychological and organizational theory. This course is designed to be relevant to the wide range of leadership opportunities that arise in work and daily life. Experiential exercises are used to help students discover and develop new leadership skills.

Instructor: Ann Steffen

Prerequisites: Nine hours of psychology, graduate standing, or consent of instructor. (MSW students normally take all foundation courses prior to enrolling in this course.)

A survey of recent theory and research in mental health issues for older populations. The primary focus is on major psychological disorders prevalent among the elderly and in treatment approaches for elders.

Note: This is a Web-based class with one required in-class discussion each week. Course makes significant use of MyGateway and online resources. Students must have access to DSL at home or be able to study in on-campus computer labs several times each week.
