Description:
This course provides an introduction to African American art of the 20th and 21st centuries and an investigation of critical issues in the interpretation and display of African American art in museums. Week one will follow a traditional model involving readings, discussion, and classroom-based activities that provide an overview of major currents and figures. Week two will be conducted at the Saint Louis Art Museum where students will study works in the collection and issued in museum practice through daylong seminars with curators and educators.

This course will provide an overview of the history of the St. Louis metropolitan region from its founding in 1764 to the present. Main topics will include: the St. Louis region before the Europeans, forces leading to the founding of the city, St. Louis as an "urban frontier," the Age of Steam on water and rail, the questions of slavery and the Civil War, St. Louis in the Gilded Age, the World's Fair, early efforts at city planning, impact of the automobile, St. Louis during the Depression and World War II, post-war suburbanization, urban renewal St. Louis style, school desegregation, the Schoemehl years, the emergence of St. Louis "Edge Cities," and St. Louis 2004.

This course will offer students an intensive introduction to the political history of immigration in the United States, as well as the evolution of policies that have variously affected the right to live, work, and become a citizen in the United States. Instruction will take place in the classroom, online, and at multiple sites in the community-at-large where immigrants from other countries have found a home in St. Louis. Highlights of the course will include interaction with local leaders and research into immigrant settlements in St. Louis. Field experiences will also include a sampling of area ethnic eateries that reflect the variety of cultural influences of immigrants in the United States today.
