IMPLEMENTING AN EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN CONFERENCE OR GIRLS' CLUB AT YOUR SCHOOL

Planning an Empowering Young Women Conference

  1. Get administrative support. Sell the conference with data, observations, etc.
  2. Determine budget.
  3. Form planning committee.
  4. Identify logistics:
    Time schedule
    Space available (large rooms, breakout space)
    Target audience (girls, coed, or parents)
  5. Communicate to parents and get permission, if needed, for girls to participate.
  6. Determine design.
    a. Awareness Activities: Older-girl panel, movie clips, speaker. This piece should be no longer than 40 minutes.
    b. Experiential Activities: Girls need to interact and reflect on self through games, art, movement, etc.
    c. Community-building Activities: Determine how the girls will share their concerns and make commitments to each other.
    d. Follow Up on the Day: Determine how you will keep the girls invested (monthly gatherings, posters, annual event).
  7. Evaluate conference.

Planning an Empowering Young Women Girls' Club

  1. Determine your commitment level (such as time and energy) as club advisor.
  2. Identify the girl leaders.
  3. Collectively determine the mission of the club.
  4. Determine logistics: Meeting space, frequency of meetings, membership (requirements, expectations, limit).
  5. Plan activities: Speakers, fun activities, awareness campaign, community service.
  6. Market the club: Communicate to school and community the club's mission and activities.
  7. Evaluate success.
