Rita Csapo-Sweet, Associate Professor of Media Studies, was selected to receive the University of Missouri President's Cross-Cultural Engagement Award for her ongoing work in the Balkans. Csapo-Sweet was also recently awarded a UM System Research Board Grant for her project, “Twenty Years Later: Cinema from the Former Yugoslavia. Visions of the Future, Ghosts of the Past. A Curatorial Retrospective. (April 2013)


Felia Davenport, Assistant Professor of Theatre, was nominated for a St. Louis Theatre Circle “Louie” Award for outstanding Costume.

Jim Henry, Associate Professor of Music, traveled with student a cappella group, Vocal Point, by invitation of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, to give performances at the college and other sites around Boston.  One local reviewer said, “From the first bar of ‘This Land is Your Land,’ they had me.  I knew that I was going to be hearing the best arranging and ensemble singing I've ever heard.” While in Boston, Vocal Point sang outside the memorial for victims of the recent Boston Marathon bombing. Jennifer Mishra, Associate Professor of Music Education, presented two papers at the London International Piano Symposium at the Royal College of Music. (February 2013)


Michael Murray, Curators' Professor of Media Studies, had an extended interview with national news icon Dan Rather, “In the Storm of the Eye: A Conversation with Dan Rather,” published in the most recent, Spring, 2013 Issue of the academic journal “Journalism History.” And his profile of former Media Studies student, alum -- and veteran KSDK-TV videographer, Jim Tuxbury, appeared as “St. Louis TV Station Covers Papal Election” about Vatican coverage, appeared in the Spring 2013 Issue of “Gateway Journalism Review.” (April 2013) 


Krista Tucciarone, Associate Teaching Professor of Media Studies, traveled with a group of Advertising students to the American Advertising Federation National Student Competition in Kansas City. The students competed against other universities in the 9th district (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas). Tucciarone was honored as 9th district 2012-13 Faculty Advisor of the Year. COMING THIS SUMMER!

Orff-Schulwerk Certification
The Department of Music and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies are partnering with the American Orff-Schulwerk Association this summer to certify music educators in Levels I and II of Orff-Schulwerk.  The certification focuses on training teachers to implement the creative music and movement approach developed by Carl Orff.  This approach is known for using pitched percussion for improvisation and composition.  The training also includes recorder and movement classes.  Sessions will be held in Villa 150, 8:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m., June 17-28, 2013.  Three hours of graduate credit is available for an additional fee.  Guest housing is available.  For information, please contact Dr. Jennifer Mishra, 314-516-5984 or mishraj@umsl.edu.


Acappellooza Summer, a music camp for high school students

Coming in July, the first annual Acappellooza Summer Camp, an a cappella music camp for students in grades 9–12. For four days, from July 16–19, 2013, students will be immersed in singing led by some of the world’s most prominent names in a cappella music, including members of the internationally famous Ambassadors of Harmony and Dr. Jim Henry, head of Choral Studies at UMSL. The event will culminate in a one-of-a-kind a cappella concert featuring all Acappellooza Summer participants sharing the stage with the world-renowned a cappella ensemble Vocal Spectrum. In addition to the intense rehearsals, this will be an opportunity for students to have fun with a pool party, karaoke party, movie night and more. The registration fee for the four-day camp is $225 through May 31, and $250 after. This fee includes admittance to the camp, professional instruction, fun activities, a t-shirt, and lunches and dinners.
