Appointments

 

Academic advising is an interactive process between a student and an advisor in which, at the minimum, the advisor assists the student with selecting appropriate classes, discusses academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements, and assesses the student's progress toward degree completion. The advisor may also be able to assist with clarifying academic and career goals, planning a program of study, and learning about educational and career options and campus resources.

The College of Business offers "by-appointment advising" for all students who seek counseling about registration, graduation requirements, transfers, and more. Since the advisor knows which student is expected, he or she has the opportunity to gather together and review the student's records in advance. This allows the advisor to provide more in depth and personal advising, and allows the advisor and student to get to know each other. Students always have the opportunity to select the advisor with whom to make an appointment.

All new students are required to make an appointment prior to registration.

Most appointments last approximately 30 minutes. Prospective students, particularly those from institutions outside the United States, should schedule 1 hour.

Current Students

Starfish is the most convenient way to schedule an advising appointment. You can access Starfish in MyGateway. Log into MyGateway using your SSOID & Password. After you log into MyGateway click the Students tab. Schedule an Advising Appointment is located under Academic Planning Tools.

When you arrive at the office for your appointment please check-in at the kiosk located on the reception desk. You can also use the kiosk to be added to the walk-in queue or to schedule a future appointment.

Appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. So plan ahead and make your appointment today!

Walk-Ins

The College of Business Administration provides advisors each day to answer general questions for students. Walk-Ins are a convenient way to address minor concerns, but are not a substitute for appointments. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments to check progress towards degree completion.

You may also contact the College of Business Advising Office via email and it will be answered as soon as possible. Remember, these questions must be quick and general.


How should I prepare for my appointment?

The role of your advisor is to assist you with educational choices. When you meet with your advisor, you will be expected to have a completed schedule with suitable alternate courses for your advisor to review (unless you are new and still learning the degree requirements). You should also arrive prepared with any questions you may have regarding courses (what a course is about, any prerequisites you may need, how often a course is offered, etc.), degree requirements, or academic policies procedures. Advisors cannot be experts on all aspects relating to a student's career , such as financial aid, employment, etc., so an advisor may need to refer you to another office or individual for assistance with some matters.

In addition to course selection, an advisor should be able to assess your progress toward meeting degree requirements. Ultimately, however, the student is responsible for making sure that all degree requirements are met, so it is important that you read and follow the requirements and policies described in the
University of Missouri-St. Louis Bulletin .
