Q and A

UMSL is rolling out a new online business degree option; can you tell me a little bit about the program?

The College of Business Administration at UMSL offers a degree completion program in which you can earn your bachelor's in business administration (BSBA). The program is referred to as UMSL Business Online and offers a pathway to complete a degree in business while taking courses online or partially online. The program offers flexibility, accessibility, and a personalized education.

What are the benefits of this online option?

The UMSL Business Online program allows students to interact with their peers online to engage in stimulating discussions and get constructive feedback from their instructors.

The program fully utilizes mobile technology to allow learning anywhere on a 24/7 basis. UMSL Business Online focuses on offering flexibility. For those seeking to expedite their degree completion, business school advisors will create customized schedules to include some face-to-face, weekend, and shorter duration courses.

What makes this program different from other online programs in the St. Louis area?

We believe that the UMSL Business Online program benefits prospective students on many fronts. First, the College of Business is the only program in St. Louis accredited by AACSB for both business and accounting and is ranked in the top 3% of business schools in the U.S. by The Princeton Review. The college has revamped its curriculum by providing innovative programs in business intelligence, social media, digital marketing, and cyber-security.

Secondly, the UMSL Business Online Program has been ranked as the 8th best online program in St. Louis by U.S. News & World Report for online bachelor’s programs. UMSL offers around 800 online courses.

Who is the ideal student for this program?

The UMSL Business Online degree completion program is designed for highly motivated individuals who have finished about half of their undergraduate coursework and want to complete their bachelor’s degree in business administration. Degree completion for traditional-aged college students as well as adult learners is at the heart of what distinguishes UMSL business from other AACSB accredited colleges and universities in the St. Louis region. Our entire academic program is focused on helping our students finish their degrees without sacrificing their personal and professional responsibilities.

What kind of experience can students expect from this online program?

Enrolling in an online program can be both exhilarating and challenging. It’s important to remember that we will be there for you during your online journey when you choose UMSL. Once you indicate interest in our program, you will be contacted by one of our admissions representatives to answer any questions about the enrollment process. You will then be assigned an academic advisor who will assist you in enrolling in classes.

Once classes start, you will quickly appreciate the convenience of not having to be on campus during the week and taking courses around your work schedule. From a technical standpoint, students can encounter challenges when working with computers; UMSL business will provide useful information about campus resources such as tutors, online resources, and technical support.

Our faculty are well aware of the need to foster communication with students in an online environment. They are expected to maintain interaction with you and provide feedback through comments as well as timely and clear assessment. This format gives students time to think about responses, enabling a more thoughtful discussion than one that occurs in person.

We encourage our online students to explore the breadth of our business program. The college presents many events and activities that will enhance your educational experience. Our program encourages students to utilize our internship program and get valuable work experience from companies such as Boeing or Scottrade.

Will the classes be taught by the same award-winning faculty that teach on the campus?

Yes. The UMSL College of Business Administration is accredited by the AACSB, which guarantees the proper mix of research faculty and business professionals. The online degree completion program offers the same rigor as our on campus program. In fact, our faculty are required to complete the campus “Online in 9” training program for online instruction. This ensures that students will be exposed to the latest technology and course design.

Will students have the opportunity to take classes on campus even if they are enrolled in this program?

Yes, UMSL Business Online students have access to all the courses offered by the business school. This can be beneficial in at least two ways. First, it gives you the opportunity to finish your program faster. Second, you may wish to specialize in one of these emphasis areas: operations management, accounting, marketing, management, finance, international business, and information systems.
