We sat down with Mike and asked him some questions.
  • Why did you decide to come to UMSL?
It is a local school with a strong, well respected business program.
  • Why did you pursue a career in information systems?
I had a general computer interest.
  • What college classes did you find most useful to your career?
I found Decision Support Systems with its introduction to the internet and much more, Systems Design, where we learned to appreciate the value of mental discriminations, Business Law with Professor Winter, Telecommunications, and Fundamentals of Production.
  • If you were in college today, what courses would you take?
I would take additional business classes, especially more Finance and Accounting.
  • How did you find your first job?
I found it through the Career Services office.
  • In what non-academic activities did you participate in college that you would recommend to others (and why)?
Working! Many employers desire candidates who have strong academic credentials and real business experience.
  • What advice would you give to someone just starting in the field?
Remember to focus on business goals first. Let that drive process updates and then get technology to support. Stay abrest of technology changes, and deep-dive when it is an enabler and/or disruptor; otherwise, focus on how technology can most efficiently enable business process change.
  • Look into your crystal ball. What do you see changing in the IS field in the future?
IS will become more of an enabler. This requires people (CIOs/CTOs) who know how to help others in business (other CXOs) understand how technology can enable business growth (vs. to provide low-cost computing).
  •        Business Intelligence and Service Oriented Architectures are two such enablers. Those who understand how to reorganize businesses to benefit from these technologies will benefit most from them, as will the companies.
