Originally told there were no suitable openings for him at Edward Jones, David Otto was eventually hired by the firm in 1994. Just two-and-a-half years later, he was named a principal, and in 1998 he assumed responsibility for the firm’s Equity Research Department.
Analysts under Otto’s guidance are responsible for reviewing and recommending individual stocks for the firm’s nearly 6 million clients. In addition, Otto has been named co-chairman of the Edward Jones Investment Policy Committee. The committee’s objective is to identify investment opportunities and risk created by current market and economic conditions.Otto was named a limited partner in 1995 and a principal in 1997. He earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1996 and is a member of the St. Louis Financial Analysts Society. In January 2000, the Financial Management Association and the National Honor Society, University of Missouri-St. Louis, named Otto Businessman of the Year.
Prior to joining Edward Jones, Otto worked for Southwestern Bell Corp., where he was responsible for managing a $7 billion debt and derivatives portfolio. He began his career in 1986 as a systems programmer at Southwestern Bell Telephone.
Otto is a cum laude graduate of St. Louis University with an M.B.A. in finance. He obtained his undergraduate degree in business and management information systems from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1986 and today serves on that institution’s College Advisory Board. He has been featured on several St. Louis TV and radio stations, PBS’ “Nightly Business Report,” CNN and CNBC.
