My research lab's efforts in clinical geropsychology focus on (1) understanding the risk for depressive syndromes in family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients (Gilliam & Steffen, 2006), (2) using this information to develop and evaluate interventions for family caregivers (Steffen, Gant & Gallagher-Thompson, 2008; Gant, Steffen & Lauderdale, 2007; Steffen, 2007), and concurrently (3) studying predictors of aging in place for healthy older adults (Mensie & Steffen, 2006).
Our work in the area of clinical treatments for older adults focuses on cognitive-behavioral interventions, and is based on theories about the role of cognitions and behaviors in negative affective states (Steffen et al., 2004). Recent works include The Handbook of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies with Older Adults (Gallagher-Thompson, Steffen & Thompson, 2008). In addition, our lab has been involved in the Affton Community Partnership, funded by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Teaching responsibilities include:
Psych 7434 Introduction to Psychotherapy
Psych 7431 Clinical Supervision
Geron 5376 Psychopathology and Aging, and

I'm also a member of the UM-St. Louis Safe Zone community.
