Scholarships
Jan Frantzen Political Science Alumni Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Political Science major
at the junior level or above (must have completed a minimum of 12 hours
of political science coursework). The amount of award depends on the judgment
of the Department's Undergraduate Committee and the availability of funds. The award is made in the Spring for the Fall semester.
Evelyn and Stuart Symington Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Political Science major
at the junior level or above (must have completed a minimum of 12 hours
of political science coursework). The award varies in amount from $300-$1000.
The award is made in the Spring for the Fall semester.
Political Science Academy Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Political Science Academy and
is awarded based on the availability of funds raised by the Academy. Eligibility
is the same as the Alumni Scholarship. The
award is made in the Spring for the Fall semester.
Politics in America Scholarship
This scholarship is supported by a gift from Professor Lance T. LeLoup
of the Department of Political Science. The award is for an outstanding
Political Science major, particularly one who has excelled in the study
of American politics. The amount of the award will be determined by the
availability of funds. The award is made in the Spring
for the Fall semester.
In addition, the department from time to time has funds available to send deserving students to various conferences. In the recent past, for example, majors have attended a Conference on the Study of the Presidency in Washington, D.C. (including a tour of Congress and the White House) as well as a Women's Leadership Conference at Rutgers University. There are also various scholarship and award competitions conducted outside the political science department that are open to political science majors, including the following:
Political Science Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Political Science major
at the junior level or above (must have completed a minimum of 12 hours
of political science coursework). One or more awards willl be made. The
amount of the award depends on the judgement of the departmnet's Undergraduate
Committee and availability of funds. The award is
made in the Spring for the Fall semester.
George Dewey Ross Scholarship
This scholarship, established in 1990 by the late Marguerite Ross Barnett
in honor of her father, is for undergraduate students pursuing degrees
in Art, English, History, Music, Philosophy, or Political Science. The
award generally is in the range of $500-$750. The awardee shall be admitted
to UM-St. Louis as a sophomore, junior or senior, be an outstanding student
who has a demonstrated financial need, and be enrolled during the year
in which the scholarship is used as a full-time student. Prior to receipt
of the scholarship, the student may have been enrolled part-time. Recipients
shall be students who are active in community service on behalf of the
disadvantaged and/or themselves be members of racially or economically
disadvantaged groups. Students must apply through the UMSL Financial Aid
Office by March 30.
Eugene J. Meehan Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students that are at the junior level or
above (60 hours degree credit hours minimum), are pursuing a baccalaureate
degree in the College of Arts and Sciences, and must maintain at least
a 3.30 GPA overall. The applicant must demonstrate excellence in their
academic discipline. Must be enrolled in at least 12 hours for the fall
semester and have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial
