Kimberley Sallee
Interests: Costa Rica study abroad program, ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interviews, Spanish language, culture, conversation, and readings, Business SpanishEducation: Kimberley Sallee received her MA in Spanish from the University of New Mexico in 2000. Prior to completing her MA, she studied at Oregon State University and the Universidad de Costa Rica.
Teaching: Kimberley regularly teaches Spanish 1001 (Spanish I), Spanish 1002 (Spanish II), Spanish 2101 (Intermediate Spanish Language & Culture), Spanish 2105 (Commercial Spanish), and Spanish 3260 (Spanish for Business). She also directs the Costa Rica Study Abroad Program which is regularly offered during the Winter Intersession. She joined the Department in 2002, after working for five years at the University of Missouri – Columbia campus as the Coordinator of Spanish 1 & 2.
Personal History: Kimberley was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and moved to Missouri to teach at the University of Missouri – Columbia. She met and married her husband after moving to the area and now lives in St Charles with her husband and daughter. Kimberley’s interest in Spanish began as a high school student in Portland, Oregon. At the age of 15, participated in a summer abroad program offered through the Partners of the Americas program and spent two months living with host families in San José, Costa Rica. She continued her studies of Spanish in college and directly enrolled in the Universidad de Costa Rica for one year before completing her undergraduate studies at Oregon State University. She attributes the encouragement of her high school and college faculty to sparking the interest in the language that she now brings to her own students here at UMSL.
Professional Activities: Kimberley is a liaison in Spanish for the Advanced Credit Program and is an Advisory Board Member for the Foreign Language Connection at UMSL. She is also currently actively involved in revising the Spanish curriculum to include an increased emphasis on oral proficiency. She recently completed the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview training workshop and is seeking full OPI certification. Additionally, she has published a number of textbook ancillary materials including the workbook, lab manual, testing bank, and online activities for Horizontes, 2nd edition, originally published by Thomson Heinle, but now a product of John Wiley & Sons, the Instructor’s Resource Manual to accompany Temas, 2nd edition, published by Thomson Heinle, and is currently working on the textbook reading strategies sections and workbook materials to accompany a new, beginning Spanish textbook, ¡Con brio!, 1st edition, published by John Wiley & Sons.
