University of Missouri-St. Louis Policy Concerning the Fulfillment of the Language Requirement in French, German, and Spanish:
A student who is not a native speaker and who has not begun language study at UMSL, but who believes that he or she can demonstrate the requisite proficiency level in French, German, or Spanish to fulfill the language requirement, may fulfill the requirement by examination subject to the following procedure and conditions:
- The student must make an appointment with the Director of Language Programs to take an exam under the Director’s supervision.
- If the student successfully demonstrates an intermediate level of proficiency in the language examined, the Director will communicate the result to the Registrar so that the language requirement may be waived.
- The student will only receive academic credit, however, for the courses that typically fulfill the language requirement (course numbers 1001, 1002, and 2101) if the student successfully completes further coursework in the language. For example, credit for 1001, 1002, and 2101 may be awarded upon successful completion of a higher level course in the language such as 2102, 2170, 2172, or 2180. A student must achieve a final grade of C- or higher to successfully complete such course.
- Students may not take the exam more than once.
A student who has already begun language study at UMSL may only attempt to test out of the language requirement if their instructor recommends this option. In this case, the following procedure and conditions apply:
- The student must ask the instructor to contact the Director of Language Programs and request that the student take an exam under the Director’s supervision.
- If the student successfully demonstrates an intermediate level of proficiency, the Director will communicate the result to the registrar so that the language requirement may be waived.
