Benjamin Torbert teaches Introduction to Linguistics, English Grammar, History of the English Language, and Sociolinguistics. Always interested in the social construction of self and other in Western thought, Professor Torbert says, “I try to build all my courses on two cornerstones: interdisciplinarity and variation. I aim to be extremely accessible in all my interactions with students.” As a sociolinguist, Professor Torbert studies the relationships between dialect and regional identity, especially in the American South and among Native Americans.
