Dr. Wolfe taught a variety of interesting and popular literature courses in such areas as mystery, modern drama, Graham Greene, Russian literature, and more. A former Fullbright lecturer in Poland and India, he has also taught in Canada, New Zealand, Taiwan, Russia, and Australia. His many book subjects include Iris Murdoch, Yukio Mishima, Rebecca West, August Wilson, Penelope Fitzgerald, and the Twilight Zone television series. Dr. Wolfe's 1993 book, Alarms and Epitaphs: The Art of Eric Ambler, won the first Armchair Detective Award for the best scholarly book in the mystery genre. His shorter work has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the Chicago Tribune, New Republic, the Calcutta Statesman, Modern Fiction Studies, the Los Angeles Times, the New Zealand Listener, the Weekend Australian, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Most recently (2013), he published The Theatre of Terrence McNally, his twenty-second book.
