UM - St. Louis Chapter of NABE

The National Association for Business Economics (NABE) is a professional association for economists who work in or study the field of the private business enterprise. NABE exists on the national level, but also has local chapters. The St. Louis local chapter is the St. Louis Gateway Chapter. UM-St. Louis is one of the few schools to have a student affiliation with National NABE.

The purpose of our student chapter of NABE is to promote interaction outside of the classroom among students sharing a common interest in economics. Our chapter was founded in 1993 by a former student, Grant Black (B.S. Economics, 1992; M.A. Economics, 1994) and is a recognized student chapter of National NABE.

No application or annual dues are necessary to participate in the student chapter of NABE at UM-St. Louis. The only requirement is that you be a current student of UM-St. Louis. Simply stop by the Department of Economics (408 SSB), or call 314.516.5353, for information on contacting the current organization representative.

In the past, our student chapter has invited outside speakers and sponsored economics seminars. One annual event that NABE has sponsored is "The Department of Economics Picnic," an annual event held early in the fall semester where students, alumni and faculty can enjoy an afternoon of barbeque and fun.

Also, members of our student chapter can attend events hosted by the St. Louis Gateway Chapter for a nominal fee. Information about these events are regularly posted on MyGateway.

St. Louis Gateway Chapter of NABE

The St. Louis Gateway Chapter of the National Association for Business Economics was founded in 1972. The mission of the organization is to provide a forum for and to facilitate the exchange of ideas on economics - related topics. St. Louis Gateway NABE's membership is diverse, including individuals working in large and small St. Louis firms, government agencies, and academia. Any individual with an interest in economics is welcome to join for a nominal membership fee. The St. Louis Gateway NABE holds monthly meetings from September through May, which feature a broad range of speakers and topics. For example, in October 2000, the organization sponsored a debate between the economic advisers for presidential candidates, George W. Bush and Al Gore.

In addition, Gateway NABE co-sponsors the Annual Homer Jones Memorial Lecture, which honors the former Research Director at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, along with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, St. Louis University, Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Washington University. This lecture features a noted economist from the U.S. or abroad. Previous speakers have included Rudiger Dornbush, Lawrence Lindsey, Helmut Schlesinger, and Anna Schwarz.

National NABE

The objectives of the National Association for Business Economists are:
  • to provide for the mutual association of economists connected with private business enterprise in order to create a forum for the discussion of common problems.
  • to provide a means of communication and exchange of experience and ideas between the business community and (a) collegiate schools of business, (b) government and (c) economists in other fields.
  • to develop and bring into sharper focus the contribution which trained economists can make in the business firm.
  • to stimulate discussion and research in matters of public policy affecting the business community and business policies affecting the national economy.
  • to distribute a periodical and conduct such other activities as may be appropriate for a non-profit, professional society.
  • to develop and offer programs of professional training to enhance the skills of the business economist.

Professional development of the business economist/analyst is assisted by a wide range of NABE activities. These include:

  • NABE Publications:
    • Business Economics
    • NABE News
    • NABE Surveys
    • Membership Directory
    • Employment Opportunities
    • Careers in Business Economics
    • Salary Survey
  • Annual Meetings
  • Policy Seminar
  • Roundtables

One of the key activities and services of the national NABE is job placement. What better way to get a start in business economics than to join an organization whose purpose lies in fostering communication and association between professionals in the field? Full time students (undergraduate or graduate) at an institution of higher learning are eligible for student membership in the national chapter of NABE.
