Hiring a Federal Work Study
Student Employee

Student employees are eager to begin working. Please inform the student of your hiring decision within two to three days. Notify Career Services as soon as a student accepts the position in your department or organization. You will be sent the student's completed employment paperwork, student wage guidelines, and instructions on how to complete the Personnel Action Form (PAF) and the Appointment Notification Form. Supervisors are responsible for completing the PAF and forwarding it with the student's employment paperwork to Human Resource Services so the student employee will be paid on time.

Please be efficient in forwarding this paperwork to Human Resource Services, as your student employee will not be paid until Career Services has been notified, the PAF and Appointment Notification have been completed, and the paperwork has been processed by Human Resource Services!

Student employees are paid by the hour. The hourly rate is based on the current federal minimum wage, skills and experience, and years of participation in the Federal Work Study program. To determine your student employee’s hourly wage, please refer to the wage guidelines sheet.

Holidays, snow days, and sick days are not to be counted as hours worked. Student employees are not paid for lunch or break periods.

Overtime is not authorized for Federal Work Study student employees and any overtime worked will be at the individual department or organization's expense.

Please remember the following guidelines for a student's eligibility to work:

  • Students must be enrolled at least half time (6 hours) during the fall or winter semesters to be eligible to work.
  • Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 if undergraduate students and 3.0 if graduate students.
  • Federal Work Study funding will be cancelled if the student drops below half time status or withdraws from UM-St. Louis.
  • Students may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, including final exams week.
  • During academic breaks, holidays, and spring break, students may work up to 40 hours per week provided that their award covers this amount.
  • Students may work up to 40 hours per week during summer, assuming they are not enrolled in summer classes, are registered for classes for the following fall semester, and have been granted full-time Federal Work Study for the summer by Student Financial Aid.
  • Students may not work during any time they are scheduled to be in class.
