Career Exploration Assessments for Students

Career exploration assessments are designed to assist you with choosing a major and/or career.  We offer career assessments, on-line resources, and individual assistance to guide you in your career decision making.

Assessments Offered at UM-St. Louis:

  • Strong Interest Inventory (SII): Measures your interests to help you identify a career focus and begin or continue your career planning and exploration process.
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): Analyzes your strengths and reveals information about how you think, communicate and interact.
  • SIGI³: A computerized, self-guided program that acts as a research tool.  With SIGI, you can evaluate your values, interests, and activities and investigate occupations.

Steps to Take:

  • Make an appointment with a Career Services or Student Development Coordinator to determine which assessment(s) fit your needs.   Pricing: SII $10; SII/MBTI $20.  There is no cost to utilize SIGI.
  • Take the assessment(s).
  • Schedule an individual appointment to review your results.

Remember, assessments are not a magic wand that will instantly locate the perfect major or career.  Assessments help you identify possibilities.  Your next task is to investigate the career options of interest to you.  This process can take some time and effort.  After completing a career assessment you will want to spend time researching careers of interest to you.  Also, talk to people in your preferred career field and gain experience.  This experience includes involvement in student organizations, volunteering, and/or obtaining an internship or degree-related position while completing your education.

Keep in mind that choices regarding your career are not static; you—and the world of work—can change.  Even if you have previously completed a career assessment, you may find that your preferences are different.   We are here to help you find success!
