Successful Student Employment Practices

Federal Work Study student employment can be very important to laying the groundwork for your future career. You should always perform your duties to the best of your abilities. Here are some guidelines to ensure that you have a positive student employment experience:

  • Be punctual.
  • Dress appropriately for your work environment.
  • Do not conduct personal business while on the job. This includes visits by friends and local or long distance phone calls.
  • Student employees are not allowed to study or do homework while they are working. If your supervisor approves you to do homework, it must be while serving a need of the work site at the same time (i.e. answering the phone, greeting visitors, etc.)
  • If you do not understand your work assignments, ask for additional instructions from your supervisor.
  • Submit your timesheet by the due date in order to be paid without interruption.
  • If you are going to be late or absent from work, notify your supervisor as early as possible. Be sure to call each day you are going to be unable to work.
  • Communicate with your supervisor at all times to avoid confusion and stressful situations.
