Applying for a Job

Students may begin their job search when they have received a packet of employment paperwork from Career Services and have scheduled a time to attend an orientation session. Available job opportunities are posted for student viewing on the web page of Career Services at http://www.umsl.edu/depts/career/oncampus/.

When you have chosen a position that matches your skills, interests, and experience, contact Career Services to receive the supervisor's name and phone number. It is the student's responsibility to contact the hiring supervisor for an interview, as students are not automatically placed in jobs through the Federal Work Study program.

When contacting potential employers, please follow these guidelines:

  • Contact the supervisor and introduce yourself as a UM-St. Louis Federal Work Study student employee.
  • State the position for which you are applying and arrange an interview time.
  • Keep your interview appointment and be on time. If you must be late or cannot keep your interview appointment, call in advance and reschedule.
  • Present yourself in a professional manner by having a neat appearance, being on time, speaking clearly, and being alert.
  • Present your UM-St. Louis Application for Employment or resume to the supervisor for review.
  • Discuss work and class schedule.
  • Ask questions to determine whether this is a work situation that matches both your needs and the needs of the supervisor.
  • Ask when a hiring decision will be made.
  • Thank the employer for the interview.

You Can Start Your Job When…

  • your Federal Work Study award has been finalized
  • you have attended an orientation session
  • you have completed the necessary employment paperwork
  • Career Services has been notified of your place of employment, and
  • the first day of classes has begun.
