Our faculty maintain high standards in the classroom and on-stage, while remaining accessible and committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for students to explore, expound, and excel in the art and craft of theatre.
The Department of Theatre and Cinema Arts offers the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with four emphasis areas: Acting/Directing, Design, Playwriting/Screenwriting, and Cinema. UMSL Theatre and Cinema students have the opportunity to experience various performance and workshop spaces. Majors in our department progress through a comprehensive curriculum that embraces all the arts and crafts of theatre and cinema.
The Department produces three to four main stage performances each year, including a full-length musical or opera. The Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center is a state of the art performance facility on campus, built to provide a home for campus events, academic programs, and regional art organizations. The Departments newest performance space is the Kranzberg Arts Center located in the Theatre District of Grand Center, offering additional opportunities and exposure within St. Louis. Non-majors are welcome to enroll in Theatre courses; several of the courses satisfy general education requirements. Students in other disciplines may also elect to pursue a Minor in Theatre. Auditions for each production are open to all majors at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
