Preconferences
The following three preconferences will take place on June 4:
AFRICAN DIASPORA
Activism and Lived Experience:
The Evolution of Africentrism
in the Field of Adult and Higher Education
The intent of the conference has been and remains a way for masters and doctoral level students of African descent/ancestry to present their research and to engage in discussion with other scholars about their research. While the conference is meant to be a forum for young scholars of African descent to gain insight, knowledge, and experience, it is open to everyone. We're encouraged by all of the research that has been presented in previous years, as it helps to open the doors of inquiry and knowledge.
ASIAN DIASPORA
The Asian Diaspora preconference is a forum that provides an opportunity for researchers of Asian ancestry to dialogue about theoretical and practical issues relevant to the scholars and practitioners within the Asian Diaspora. In this conference, it is hoped that:
- adult educators may begin to understand and acknowledge the complex cultural context that adult learners bring to the learning setting
- adult educators of Asian ancestry will continue to position their experiences, issues, and interests as the center of their teaching/learning perspective
- this forum can be perceived as a site for professional collaboration and networking
LGBTQ & ALLIES
Transcending the Rhetoric of "Family Values":
Celebrating Families of Choice and Families of Value
The intentions of this preconference are to:
- promote the improvement of research and evaluation in adult education on topics of importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities
- foster professional collaboration among persons who are interested in or conduct research, or utilize research findings on topics related to LGBT and Queer issues in the field of adult education
- offer support, collegiality, and a safe space for dialogue among LBGTQ faculty and students--as well as allies--at the AERC and beyond
