(to be considered for approval at April 23, 2002, organizational meeting of the 2002-03 Faculty Senate)

FACULTY SENATE

UM-ST. LOUIS

March 19, 2002

2:30 p.m.

Century Room A

Millennium Student Center

Dr. Lawrence Barton, Chairperson of the 2001-02 Faculty Senate, called to order the first organizational meeting of the 2002-03 Senate at 2:35 p.m.   Dr. Barton read the names of newly-elected and re-elected senators for the Senate’s information.  He then opened the floor for nominations for a voting faculty senator to serve as Chairperson in 2002-03.  Dr. Charles Korr nominated Dr. William Connett (Mathematics and Computer Science).  Dr. Carole Murphy nominated Dr. Van Reidhead (Anthropology).  Dr. Fred Willman nominated Dr. Lawrence Barton (Chemistry).  Dr. Korr raised a question concerning the need for a majority rather than a plurality, and the Parliamentarian, Dean David Ganz, was consulted.  Ms. Arban provided Dean Ganz with a copy of the Bylaws for his perusal.  Ballots were distributed and collected for immediate tally.

The vote was 11 for Dr. Reidhead, 9 for Dr. Connett, 8 for Dr. Barton.  Unfortunately, the bylaws were found to be silent on the issue of the need for a

majority, and Dean Ganz ruled, in accordance with Robert’s Rules, that a majority vote was required.  The Faculty Senate voted again between Drs. Reidhead and Connett, and Dr. Reidhead prevailed, 22 to 7.

Dr. Reidhead chaired the remainder of the organizational meeting.  He opened the floor for nominations for a voting faculty senator to serve as Senate Secretary in 2002-03.  Dr. Lois Pierce was nominated by Dr. Gary Burger.  Dr. Pierce, the sole nominee, was then elected by acclamation.

Next, Dr. Reidhead invited nominations for elected faculty senators to serve on the 2002-03 Senate Committee on Committees.  Nominees were:

Humanities – Dr. Nancy Gleason (English)

Social Sciences – Dr. Timothy McBride (Economics)

Science/Math – Drs. William Connett (Mathematics and Computer

Science) and Dr. Lawrence Barton (Chemistry)

Fine Arts and Communication – Dr. James Richards (Music)

Business Administration – Dr. Thomas Eyssell (Finance and

 Legal)

Education – Dr. Patricia Simmons (Teaching and Learning)

                        Nursing – Dr. Gail Rea

Optometry – Drs. William Long and Carl Bassi

Candidates for all positions except for Science/Math and Optometry were elected by acclamation.  Ballots were collected for immediate tally to decide the outcome of the contested races.  Drs. Lawrence Barton and Carl Bassi prevailed 20 to 5 and 15 to 10, respectively.

Chair Reidhead requested members of the Committee on Committees to convene briefly in the hall.

Completing the business at hand, the meeting adjourned at 2:55 p.m.

                                                Respectfully submitted,

                                                Lois Pierce
