The Faculty Senate and University Assembly of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) are designated by the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University to exercise the functions delegated to them by the faculty as a whole. The Faculty Senate meets four times each semester and the University Assembly meets at least twice. The members of both Senate and Assembly consider important issues and make relevant decisions on behalf of the campus community, as well as provide advisory roles for the Chancellor and the University senior administration. The two bodies collectively represent the interests of the faculty, students, and staff of the University of Missouri-St. Louis -- a premier urban research university.

The campus will be undergoing many exciting changes over the next year as construction projects move closer to completion.  These will provide new teaching and laboratory facilities and a state of the art recreation center.  Although these and other promising developments are taking place, the campus once again faces a challenging financial environment and a major budget exercise through the Provost's Budget Realignment Taskforce.  Campus goals for improving student retention and graduation are being pursued and are important for the ultimate success of the campus.  The input of faculty and staff will be essential for meeting these goals.  The Faculty Senate and the shared governance process can contribute greatly to communication and deliberation on these and many other issues.

I look forward to serving as Chair of the Faculty Senate in 2014-2015.  I will work hard to forward the goals of the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Missouri-St. Louis and support the University in service to St. Louis and the State of Missouri.
