PHD PROGRAM IN CHEMISTRY

The Chemistry Department has a strong research emphasis but is of medium size, allowing substantial interaction between research advisors and Ph.D. students. There is an international make-up to the faculty and postdoctoral fellows, and there are graduate students presently in the department from the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The department is very well equipped with modern instrumentation and computing resources. These include outstanding NMR, X-ray and Mass Spectrometry facilities, with two 300 MHz and one 500 MHz NMR spectrometers, three single-crystal and one powder X-ray diffractometers, a JEOL M station and GC-MS facilities. Areas of research specialization include the traditional areas of Inorganic, Organic, Physical chemistry, and Biochemistry, as well as organometallic, supramolecular, interfacial and computational chemistry, laser spectroscopy and the study of new materials. Former graduates are employed in research positions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in academic positions, and in other areas such as high-tech computer applications.

Graduate Assistantships, for those entering the Ph.D. program in either August or January, are presently in excess of $15,000. In addition, a number of competitive research fellowships are available to the most highly qualified students. Tuition fees for all coursework are waived by the Graduate School. The university offers a health insurance plan and help in finding on- or off-campus housing will be provided. For successful overseas applicants, some assistance with airfares to St. Louis may be available. Overall the University of Missouri-St. Louis offers a strong research and educational commitment, generous stipends and good future employment prospects. Contact us by phone, e-mail or phone for an application package, for more information or to arrange a visit to campus.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis is situated on landscaped grounds in suburban St. Louis and has a student body of about 15,000. Both on-campus and off-campus housing is available at low cost compared to most parts of the United States. UM-St. Louis is a growing campus. Recent additions include a new Computer Science building and the Center for Molecular Electronics; a Performing Arts Center and new Student Center are under construction.

St. Louis, for those unfamiliar with the city, is located in the central United States at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, and has a population of over 2 million. It is a major chemical industry center, serving as headquarters for Monsanto, Solutia, Sigma-Aldrich, and Mallinckrodt, as well as being home to Anheuser-Busch and a major component of the Boeing Company. St. Louis is also a major center for the Arts, particularly music and theater. It boasts major league baseball, football and hockey teams and is home to the internationally acclaimed Missouri Botanical Gardens. Easy access to the picturesque Ozark Mountains, lakes, National Forest, and National Scenic Riverways areas provide an added attraction of this part of the country. St. Louis International airport has direct flights to major cities around the United States as well as to Canada, Mexico and some European cities.
