Message regarding MetroLink incident near UMSL

04/06/17

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

An individual was fatally shot on the MetroLink last night just prior to the train’s arrival at the UMSL South Campus platform. A suspect has been apprehended. Neither the victim nor suspect is associated with UMSL, but several UMSL students were on the MetroLink when the shooting occurred or shortly thereafter.

We’re aware that this situation is most troubling on several fronts for our students and employees. Therefore, campus police and counseling services are available to speak with individuals or groups.

Please contact UMSL Police Chief Forrest Van Ness at 516-5155 to arrange an individual or group meeting. Also, please refer to this website for safety tips: http://safety.umsl.edu/police/safety/index.html.

If you would like to discuss your reactions in a private, confidential setting, Counseling Services will prioritize appointments for students who indicate they are seeking support related to last night's events. You can reach Counseling Services between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 516-5711 or by coming to 131 MSC. For emergency and crisis counseling support during evenings and weekends, counselors are available at 1-855-275-0210. Please email Chris Sullivan, Clinical Director for Counseling Services, at sullivan@umsl.edu with any questions regarding the support and assistance Counseling Services can provide.

Your safety and well-being are among our top priorities. Please use the services above as appropriate. And don’t hesitate to suggest other ways in which we can keep UMSL a safe and welcoming campus.

Regards,

Tom George
Chancellor
