What is group counseling?
Group counseling, like individual counseling, is intended to help people who would like to improve their ability to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives., While in individual therapy you meet with only your therapist, , in group counseling you meet with a group of people and one or two therapists.
UMSL – Center for Behavioral Health is collaborating with Variety – St. Louis to provide monthly group therapy services to the siblings of children/adolescent with various disabilities. The group focuses on providing supportive validation and empathy to adolescent siblings (ages 12-16) of those with disabilities. Other intended purposes include:
- Providing a place for siblings to speak their mind without any judgments.
- Setting aside time outside of the home and meeting others who share an understanding of their unique situation.
- Helping to resolve frustrations and enabling self-expression.
It should be noted, Variety –St. Louis facilitates all referrals to this closed group.
