Group Swim Lesson Policies

Registration

Participants or their caregivers are asked to choose the class day and time that best meets their schedule.  Make-up lessons are not offered for swimmer absences including but not limited to personal scheduling conflicts, missed lessons due to brief illness, vacation, etc.

Registration after the start of the session may be allowed based on enrollment capacity but is not guaranteed.  Please register prior to the start of the session to ensure your space in the class.

Classes are subject to minimums/maximums, instructor/location changes, fee changes and /or cancellation. Once a participant is enrolled in the session the Aquatics Coordinator may consolidate classes or times to ensure proper instructor to student ratios.  All participants or their caregivers will be notified before any changes or cancellations are made.

Attire

All participants must wear traditional lined swimsuits as required by the St. Louis County Health Department.  Sportswear and athletic attire are not suitable substitutes.  Additional clothing may be worn over the swimwear for cultural, religious or modesty purposes but must be close fitting and preferably made of nylon, lycra and/or spandex materials as cotton increases the strain on pool filtration systems.  The participant must rinse thoroughly in the additional clothing prior to entering the pool.

Lesson Length

Lesson length is based on the age and number of participants enrolled in the class.  Parent/child and Preschool classes with a minimum of three swimmers are scheduled for 30 minutes due to the size and attention span of the participants.  Youth and Teen/Adult classes with a minimum of three swimmers are scheduled for 40 minutes as the ability to stay warm and attention span increase with age and size.

A class may run with fewer than three participants at the discretion of the Aquatics Coordinator.  Therefore, the class meeting time will be adjusted down as the lesson now resembles a private or semi-private lesson.  In these instances, students benefit from more individualized instruction and practice time and may progress more quickly in their skill development.

Lesson Structure

The first lesson of the session includes a brief orientation to the facility and program for both the participants and their caregivers.  Following this orientation, participants’ skills and abilities are assessed and instructors assigned accordingly.

The remaining class meetings for Parent/Child, Preschool and Youth programs include a safety topic, skill review, introduction of new skills, structured practice and activities that reinforce learning and retention.  Participants in the Teen/Adult lessons engage in goal setting and lesson planning to match their personal interests.

Photographs & Videos

The Recreation and Wellness Center has a policy against the use of recording devices in the Natatorium for the safety and privacy of our members, guests, and program participants.  However, we realize that families and caregivers may want to document milestones and progress of the participants they care for.  Therefore, photos and videos are allowed only during the participant’s scheduled lesson time.  Please contact the Aquatics Coordinator in you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy.

Lesson Cancellations

There are times when unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather, mechanical failure, power outage or the like may cause the cancellation of the in-water portion of a class.  In such situations, our priority is the safety and wellbeing of any member or guest currently using the Natatorium.  Once the facility is clear of participants, staff members will attempt to contact swim lesson participants, notifying them of the cancellation.

Parent/Child, Preschool and Youth program participants at the Recreation & Wellness Center at the time of the cancellation may opt to stay for a land-based safety lesson in lieu of the in-water class.  For classes cancelled prior to the participant’s arrival either a make-up lesson will be scheduled or a refund/credit will be issued.  These options are based on instructor, participant, and facility availability.

Refund/Credit

A full refund will be given for any program cancelled by the Recreation & Wellness Center.  Prorated refunds will be given up to two weeks after the start of the fee based program.  Exceptions include job loss, death, sudden illness, or moving 50 miles or more away from the Recreation & Wellness Center.  Documentation must be provided at the time of the refund/credit request.  Late/prorated registrations are not eligible for refunds/credits. Credits must be applied to the session following their issuance.

Transfer Policy

Participants that wish to transfer to another class within the same session must contact the Aquatics Coordinator for approval.  Transfers are not allowed from one session to another.  Participants unable to attend the current session may request a refund or credit based on the criteria above.
