Since 1914, the American Red Cross has helped millions of people learn to swim through the nation’s first water safety program, and it’s still the gold standard more than 100 years later!

Session Information

Sessions are seven (7) lessons in length and classes meet one day per week for evening & weekend classes or two days per week for daytime classes.  Fees are for the entire 7 lesson session and must be paid in full at registration.

Summer: June 4 – July 28, 2018
Classes meet one day per week.
No classes July 2 - July 7 for holiday week.

Registration open: April 30 - June 16, 2018

Class Descriptions, Schedules & Fees

Minimum class size for any level is 3 participants.  If minimum is not reached on the first class meeting, the class will be cancelled.

Parent / Child - Ages 6 months through 3 years, 30 minute lessons

Children and their caregivers learn together to increase the child’s comfort level in the water while building a foundation of basic skills such as arm and leg movements, breath control and safe entries through guided discovery, songs and games. Each child must have an adult caregiver in the water with them during the class.

Saturdays 9:45 AM - 10:15 AM

Fees: 
Members: $42 ($6/lesson)
Non Members: $56 ($8/lesson)

Preschool - Ages 3 through 5, 30 minute lessons

Participants explore basic skills through repetition and muscle memory while encouraging safety in the water. Entry and exit, breath control, gliding, floating, jumping, treading water and combined arm and leg actions are just a few of the skills practiced each class meeting while developing comfort and independence.

Youth - Ages 6 through 12, 40 minute lessons

After a brief assessment on the first day of class, participants are divided into groups based on comfort in the water and swimming ability. Beginners focus on water adjustment and development of basic swimming skills such as breath control, floating, gliding, treading water and combined arm and leg actions. More experienced participants will expand upon those concepts and work to fine tune their strokes and breath control while increasing their endurance and learning new skills.

Teen & Adult - Ages 13 through adult, 40 minute lessons

Following a skills assessment during the first class meeting, participants are able to customize their learning by developing and working toward their own goals with the assistance of their instructor. Beginners, self-taught swimmers and everyone in between will learn and refine basic skills while building the confidence and endurance needed to enjoy this lifetime activity.

* To receive UMSL Student pricing, the student must be enrolled in the current semester and the individual taking swim lessons.

Remember, there’s no need to worry about what level to enroll in.  Just sign up for the appropriate age group and we’ll do the rest.  The first day of each session includes an orientation to swim lessons and a skills assessment, which takes the guesswork out of registration!

Registration

Please visit our Membership and Program Online Access Portal page for information on setting up your online account. After your account is set up, you can register for lessons online. You can also visit the Recreation and Wellness Center Triton Trading Post to register with our Member Services Staff. 

Refunds will be given up to two weeks after the start of the fee based program.  The refund will be a prorated amount and will only be fully refunded if the class is cancelled. Some exceptions for full refunds are  job loss, death, sudden illness, or moving 50 miles or more from RWC (documentation required).
