Passed by a student referendum in the 2011-2012 academic year by an overwhelming majority of students, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) is a building central to the continued campus development at UMSL. As the Recreation and Wellness Center was built at the request of the student body, it is important to highlight that student input was key in shaping the amenities available. Construction began in 2013 and the facility is scheduled to open for the fall of 2015. The RWC adds approximately 100,000 square feet of space for open recreation, intramural sports, and wellness education. The area chosen for the RWC south of the Millennium Student Center was picked to assist in framing a campus quadrangle around the ponds and provides a dramatic view of the surrounding architecture and landscape while offering a centralized location for the UMSL community.

All currently enrolled students are able to utilize the facility by showing their Triton Card. Faculty/staff, alumni, and community members were also important in shaping the building and have the opportunity to purchase memberships. The Recreation and Wellness Center not only offers a wonderful place for students, faculty, staff, alumni and community to socialize and have fun together, but offers practical experiences for students in the form of employment in several areas of the facility. These positions allow for students to take on additional responsibility, hone their leadership skills and interact with all members of the facility from a different perspective.

Prior to the opening of the RWC, all Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services were administered under the Department of Athletics at the Mark Twain Building. This space is now fully dedicated to the Department of Athletics, its teams, players, and special rentals and programs.
