Designed and taught by Phil Dunlap, a 10-year veteran of the non-profit arts industry, this course takes an in-depth look at business aspects through the lens of the arts. With an emphasis on cultivating and developing an entrepreneurial perspective, topics examined will include the history of, and future challenges of the arts industry; developing and managing your personal brand (website, resume, CV); examining non-profit vs. for-profit organizational structures; budgeting as it relates to the production of a performance or exhibition; budgeting as it relates to the functioning of an organization; program development and evaluation; fundraising and grant writing, marketing and PR concerns, and much more. This class is discussion based and does not use a textbook. Weekly readings and case studies are assigned in-class and made available through MyGateway.
