The Department of English at the University of Missouri–St. Louis is the school's largest humanities department, offering a variety of courses ranging from literary studies, critical theory, film and drama to women's studies, cultural studies, creative writing and journalism. The department provides opportunities for intensive, wide-ranging humanist knowledge and inquiry in preparation for professional writing, teacher certification, graduate study or other professions that may benefit from extensive training in literature, language and critical analysis.

The Department of English has an in-house literary magazine, Litmag, which publishes original work by UMSL students. Undergraduate students serve on the magazine's editorial board, learning invaluable knowledge and insight on the publishing trade. Natural Bridge serves as UMSL's graduate literary magazine and is maintained by the MFA in Creative Writing program's graduate students. 

UMSL's English faculty is composed of dedicated teachers, scholars and writers committed to the values of humanities in both theory and practice. Supporting UMSL's brilliant faculty is UMSL's Writing Center, a writing lab that offers students one-on-one and group consultations on papers, projects and presentations.

What UMSL has to offer

In addition to traditional employment as teachers at primary, secondary and community-college levels, recent UMSL graduates in English work in journalism, editing, advertising, public relations and other fields that place a premium upon creation and interpretation of the written word.

The Department of English offers a BA in English, BA in English with certification for secondary teaching and B.S. in secondary education with an emphasis area in English. The department also offers a minor in english. Students may earn a certificate in writing, professional writing or technical writing. At the graduate level, the Department of English offers an MA in English and an MFA in creative writing with emphasis areas in fiction, poetry and nonfiction.
