What UMSL has to offer

The Department of Art and Art History maintains a Visual Resources Center, which contains several dozen videos and over 80,000 slides. This invaluable collection, including rich examples of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography and decorative arts, is available to staff and students.

Students are also encouraged to showcase their art or intern as gallery assistants in any of UMSL's three excellent galleries: Gallery 210, Gallery FAB or Gallery Visio.

Want to teach art? Art is a required subject in Missouri public schools with visual art often used to fulfill the fine arts credit required for graduation. With only 300 art teachers in the St. Louis area, art teachers are in demand statewide. UMSL offers art teacher certification to degree and post-degree students who complete the proper education requirements.

The Department of Art and Art History offers course work leading toward the BA in Art History and BFA in studio art. Minors in both art history and studio art are also available, as well as a certificate in photographic studies, which stands as the only program of its kind in the country.
