Louis S. Gerteis is Professor of History at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  He received his PhD in history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has taught at UMSL since 1969.Gerteis specializes in the history of the Civil War Era.  He is the author of four books and numerous articles and book chapters.  Among his recent publications are Civil War St. Louis (Lawrence: University of Kansas Press, 2001) and The Civil War in Missouri: A Military History (Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 2012).  Among his recent journal publications is “New Madrid Bend: The Most Important Civil War Battle in Missouri,” Gateway, The Magazine of the Missouri History Museum, vol  31(2011), 11-21.
