Kevin Fernlund is a Professor of History, specializing in the History of the American West, Exploration, and Big History. He is the author of Lyndon B. Johnson and Modern America (2009) and William Henry Holmes and the Rediscovery of the American West (2000) as well as the editor of Selected Historical Documents to Accompany America's History, Volume 2:Since 1865 (2011) and The Cold War American West, 1945 to 1989 (1998). Between 2006 and 2012, Fernlund served as the Executive Director of the Western History Association and is currently a member of the WHA’s Financial Advisory Board. He received a Fulbright Fellowship and spent a year in Hanoi, Vietnam (2001-2002). Before pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico, he taught social studies at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Arizona, and at Tuba City High School on the Navajo Indian Reservation. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University, after graduating in 1977 from Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona.
