Dr. Joyman Lee

I joined the UMSL faculty in August 2013 as a visiting assistant professor of history. My main interests are in modern Chinese and Japanese history, as well as business, economic, policy and technology history. I received my first degree from Cambridge University in England, and have completed the degree requirements for my Ph.D. in history at Yale University in July 2013. My dissertation "Where Imperialism Could Not Reach: Chinese Industrial Policy and Japan, 1900-40" looks at the influence of a set of Japanese institutions designed to provide overseas market and technological information to rural producers in Japan, on China in the first decades of the twentieth century.

A fluent speaker of Chinese and Japanese, my work has been recognized by Britain’s Kennedy Scholarship (the country’s highest award for postgraduate study in America), the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation and the Japan Foundation. I have published an article in History Today (cited in the New York Times and the Atlantic) on the history of the Sino-Japanese island crisis, a number of book reviews in peer-reviewed journals, and op-eds on China’s relations with the countries of the global South and regional history in China. By the end of this academic year, I will have presented my work at conferences including the American Historical Association, Society for the History of Technology, Social Science History Association, as well as in China and Japan.
