Nanora Sweet chairs the English Department and for the present teaches Women Heroes and Romantic Tales, 20th/21st Century American Women's Poetry, Tales of the Islamic East, and seminars: Romanticism and Gender, The Shelleys, Poets in Pairs, Literary Journal Editing, and Introduction to Graduate Study in English.

Dr. Sweet is currently working on a critical book about the nineteenth-century's most popular woman poet, Felicia Hemans (Hemans and the Shaping of History, A Romantic Poetics); having written a life of Hemans for the definitive Dictionary of National Biography, she looks toward a second book, The Fever: A Biography of Felicia Hemans; as co-editor of one essay collection, Felicia Hemans: Reimagining Poetry in the Nineteenth Century, with Julie Melnyk, she contemplates another, Editor's Choice: Essays on Felicia Hemans with Michael T. Williamson. Author of two poetry chapbooks, she is a Joint Appointee in UMSL's Institute for Women's and Gender Studies; a founding member of Loosely Identified, a Women's Poetry Workshop; and a Board member of River Styx Magazine and Reading Series. Dr. Sweet says, "Reading strengthens writing and writing moves the world: I'm here to facilitate these powers and relationships for students," and "Fiction, poetry, and drama are given to the world in the workaday prose of supporters, blurb-writers, reviewers, critics, biographers, editors, et al."
