The Pierre Laclede Honors College is open to qualified and motivated students in every undergraduate major and provides its students with challenging and interesting ways to meet their general education and other graduation requirements such as cultural diversity or global awareness. Almost all Honors courses are taught in interactive seminars, with an average enrollment of 14 students. University faculty volunteers join each year with the Honors College's own faculty to offer a wide choice of courses with titles such as "Disasters: nature's Fury vs. Man's Resolve", "A Cultural & Social History of Death & Death Rituals," "Medical Anthropology," "Feminism & Witchcraft," "International Business Ethics," "The Samurai Tradition," "The Genius of Alfred Hitchcock," and "A Natural History of Parks" -- among many other. Honors students also undertake independent study projects, which can include research in their major fields as well as internships and directed readings. All students participate in the Honors College Writing Program, and this participation can be extended to take dedicated writing courses (e.g. "Nature Writing", "Feature Writing", "Flash Fiction") or even the seminar which annually produces the Honors literary magazine, "Bellerive".
Honors College students, faculty, and staff constitute a community of scholars committed to active learning and personal development. The College offers a four-year program for first-time freshmen, and a two-year program for students wishing to transfer in (from other colleges or from UMSL). All share the educational and social advantages of Honors study, and all Honors students in good standing receive renewable scholarships. In addition to theses admission scholarships, we have additional named scholarships, thanks to the generosity of many donors, which students can apply for separately. And there are annual award scholarships for distinguished academic performance each semester as well. There are special purpose scholarships for students already enrolled in the Honors College, for instance to support supervised research projects or to subsidize travel expenses for exchange study.
Advising: Each Honors College student is advised by an Honors faculty member, who assists in planning the student's Honors College career. Honors faculty advisors also offer counsel on non-honors courses, but students-- especially Juniors and Seniors--are urged to also seek advice from their major departments or colleges. The capstone Honors 4100 ("Portfolio Writing"), taken as a one- or two-credit course in the senior year, includes faculty support for students' job and graduate school applications.
Admissions: Univeristy of Missouri - Saint Louis students wishing to apply for transfer admission to Honors should contact the college's admissions office at (314)516-7769 or (314)516-6870. Walk-ins are welcome, and interested students may also attend Honors College Open House days, which occur throughout the year.
