The College of Education is noted for its engaged educators and innovative education programs. Bachelor's degrees from the College of Education prepare students for teaching careers in early childhood, elementary, secondary, physical education, and special education. Minors in mathematics education, and literacy education are also offered. We also prepare career changers for the classroom.
The College of Education faculty values early and frequent classroom experiences for its students. Students in the College of Education work with studio schools in which certification students are given the opportunity to work directly with students. In this creative learning environment, our students bring cutting edge professional practice into actual classroom and school settings.
The Bachelor of Educational Studies degree is offered in the College. This non-certification degree offers emphasis areas in early childhood education and professional studies. Coaching and exercise science emphases are under development.
The College of Education offers six Master's degree programs, two Education Specialist degree programs, numerous graduate certificate programs, and two doctoral programs. Many graduate degrees provide advancement opportunities to practicing teachers while others provide entry or advancement into education related careers with institutions other than schools. Programs leading to careers in school counseling and school psychology are available, as well as programs linked to teacher certification endorsements in teaching of reading and teaching English to speakers of other languages and to careers in school leadership.
Academic Advising: Academic advising is available to all undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education through the Office of Advising and Student Services, 116 So. Campus Classroom Building. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Appointments can be made for current students using the Grades First program or for prospective students at 314-516-5937.
Advisors assist all students with program planning, course selections and state certification requirements. Students are highly encouraged to see their academic advisor each semester. All students must complete the formal application to the Teacher Education Program after the successful completion of Level I courses.
Students approaching the internship practicum/student teaching practicum experience should note they must apply approximately two semesters prior to the one in which they intend to intern or student teach. Application dates and times are posted in our Office and on the Office website.
