Students and Teachers As Research Scientists (STARS)
Dear High School Student:
The STARS Program offers academically-talented students who are entering their junior or senior year of high school and their teachers a rare opportunity to work within a laboratory research setting with top scientists at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Solae, Washington University in St. Louis, and the host institution, the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
For six weeks (Monday, June 11- Friday, July 20, 2012) participants will join a community of investigators working under the supervision of practicing research scientists. More than 60 scientists who work in fields such as biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, medicine, physics, and psychology will share their experiences as they and their research team direct students and teachers in research projects.
Activities include a research paper (presented at the end of the program), lectures by nationally-known scientists, career confabs, communications, and social activities. Most of the STARS participants are rising seniors, although we do consider very outstanding rising junior level students.
The application dates are between Thursday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 28, 2012. STARS will have an information booth at the Summer Opportunity Fair, Saturday, January 28, 2012, 10:00am-3:00pm at the Whitfield School, 175 South Mason Road. STARS staff, former students, and parents will be available to answer your questions. All are welcome!
Tuition for the 2012 STARS Program will be $2,495. All students must pay a non-refundable $75 application fee.
There is a limited amount of financial aid and students must present a compelling reason to be considered for assistance.
