Launched in February 2000, the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) provides nurse educators with essential training in end-of-life/ palliative care and provides participants with the knowledge and resources to share this with other nursing colleagues. The ELNEC-Core Curriculum training program was originally funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to improve end-of-life care for patients through the preparation of nurse educators in clinical and academic environments. Over the past eight years, additional funding has been provided by the National Cancer Institute, Open Society Institute, Aetna, Archstone, Department of Veterans Affairs, Oncology Nursing, and California HealthCare Foundation. ELNEC is administered through a partnership between the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), in Washington, DC and the City of Hope, in Duarte, CA.
Who Should Attend
Nurses who currently work in a variety of clinical, community settings, as well as schools of nursing, who want to increase their knowledge in end-of-life/palliative care issues.

- Other members of the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, social workers, hospice workers, and chaplains, are also welcome to attend (e.g. Nurses in acute care facilities accompanied by local hospice, homecare, long term care colleagues; Faculty from schools of nursing accompanied by clinical partners)
Two ELNEC curricula will be taught simultaneously: ELNEC-Core and ELNEC-Critical Care. These are Train-the-Trainer courses and upon completion, participants will be able to take this information back to their institution and teach others. Participants are encouraged to bring community partners with them so they can learn to provide seamless care as patients and their families go from one facility to another.
Eligibility Requirements
- Interest in end-of-life/palliative care
- Commitment to implementation and dissemination of end-of-life/palliative care education within your institution or organization
- Commitment and vision to partner with other institutions/organizations in your community to improve palliative care throughout all systems of care
Upon completion of program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality care at the end of life.
- Describe pharmacological and non- pharmacological therapies used to relieve pain.
- Identify common symptoms associated with end-of-life processes.
- Define the role of the nurse in supporting ethical practice in end-of-life care.
- Identify dimensions of culture and the influence of culture on end-of-life care.
- Define the importance of ongoing communication with the interdisciplinary team, patient, and family throughout the end-of-life process.
- Define loss, mourning, grief and bereavement.
- Assess physical, psychological, social and spiritual care needs and interventions for an imminently dying patient and their family.
- Describe the multiple roles for nursing in improving quality care at the end of life.

Cancellation policy: Registrations cancelled before May 1st will be assessed a $50 cancellation fee. Registrations cancelled between May 2nd and August 1st will be assessed a $250 cancellation fee. CE Information
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Provider No. 13380 for 12 contact hours. (CE Provider: City of Hope National Medical Center/Beckman Research Institute). No partial CEs given so participation in the entire course is required. Registered nurses from other states may petition their state nursing board to accept CEs from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
