International Student Orientation

Moving to a new place can be both exciting and challenging. Fortunately, many staff and students at UMSL want to share your excitement and help you through the challenges. At orientation, you will meet many of these people. Orientation will equip you with the skills to transition smoothly and succeed at UMSL. Orientation is also a fun way to learn about St. Louis and your new university. We are glad you chose UMSL and we look forward to welcoming you to our campus community!

New student orientation runs from Monday, August 12 - Thursday, August 15, 2013. Orientation is mandatory for all incoming international students. You must register and complete immigration check-in during the specified times on the first day of orientation.

During orientation, you can:

register for classes
connect with other UMSL students
learn about your immigration status
discover student organizations
go shopping
gather tips about safety, health, and cultural adjustment
get to know campus and St. Louis before classes begin

Who should attend?

Orientation is required for all new F-1 and J-1 students, both graduate and undergraduate.
Orientation is not required for new H-4 or H-1B students, but you are encouraged to attend.
Note: We record attendance. If you miss an orientation session, you must attend a make-up session.

Where is orientation?

Orientation is on the third (3^rd) floor of the Millennium Student Center (MSC) on UMSL's North Campus. See umsl.edu/maps.html for maps.

On Monday, August 12, please bring the following items to orientation:

- your I-20 or DS-2019
- your passport and visa
- your local St. Louis address
- all documents above for each dependent (spouse or children), if applicable
- a fun photograph of yourself. The photo should show us something about your life – it can be with family, with friends, at home, at your school, playing sports, or anything else that represents you. We will use these photos in an activity, so bring a photo that you can cut and glue. ISS will keep the photo.

Highlight: International House Welcome Party International student leaders Judy, Nora, and Chris invite you to an evening of outdoor games and typical American snacks and drinks. The winners of the Scavenger Hunt will also be revealed. The iHouse is near Meadows and Oak Hall, at 8026 Natural Bridge Road. Ask an orientation leader for directions. The iHouse hosts activities to promote intercultural exchange at UMSL. Watch for events such as the Multicultural Talent Show.
